THE PIANO

What I’m trying to do right now is uproot rhythm from my right foot and force it to march up into my left hand, break up into five separate parts, and take over operations in the fingers independently of what my right hand’s fingers are doing. Rhythm is not very happy about this. It wants to stay in my right foot all in one piece.

My left hand’s fingers are also not happy. They want to continue behaving the way they always have. They do not want rhythm to move in. “How will you ever channel the glory of Gershwin, the delights of Duke Ellington, the fabulousness of Fats Domino?” I ask my stupid fingers. Stonily, churlishly, they just curl back into a fist, except for the middle one.

THE TRUTH

The truth is, I’m not sure if I’m doing this right. The truth is, I am sometimes exhausted by the relentless necessity of compromise. The truth is, it’s been raining here all day. The truth is, working is not as much fun as vacationing.

TWELVE

Here I quote the music theory section of Classical Music for Dummies:

“And that’s it...a total of 12 notes. Almost every piece of Western music you ever hear – on a CD, on the radio, in the concert hall, or even in your head (italics mine) consists of these 12 pitches alone.”

Mind boggling.

An aside to readers of recent Mango archives; yes, I realize that the old yellow elements are currently having a little run-in with the newer white background in there. I do intend to do something about it. Some day. Soon.
